BUHLER - First-year Monarch Colton Cowser broke a single-game franchise record, but it wasn't enough for Hutchinson to defeat the El Dorado Broncos on Wednesday at Wray Field.
The Broncos used a pair of two-run bleeders in a four-run seventh inning to defeat the Monarchs 6-4.
The game was moved to Wray Field in Buhler because Hobart-Detter Field was underwater from overnight rains.
Cowser stole five bases against the Broncos on Wednesday to surpass the previous single-game record two others shared. His fifth steal came in the sixth inning. He stole third to put himself in position to score the go-ahead run on Garrett Stephens' groundout for a 2-1 Monarch lead.
Cowser's five steals were more than half of a franchise team record eight steals in the game. Taylor Barber had two stolen bases and Conor Craig also stole a pair.
Cowser moved past Mace Krol (2011) and Jose Nossa (2013) for the single-game stolen base record. Cowser had thre steals against the Derby Twins on June 5. Cowser is now a perfect 11 of 11 in steals this season to already move himself into a tie for ninth on the Monarchs' single-season list with Luke Acosta and Bobby Morgensen.
Leading 2-1 after six innings, El Dorado had runners at second and third with two out. Wtih a 3-2 count, Monarch pitcher Matt Dillard threw a great pitch, but El Dorado first baseman Dawson Woods got just enough to drop a hit down the left-field line and score both runs to give El Dorado a 3-2 lead. Two batters later, the same fate awaited reliever Dawson Dreher, who punched a bleeder into shallow left for two more runs and a 5-2 Bronco lead.
El Dorado, which out-hit Hutchinson 10-6, added an insurance run in the ninth for a 6-2 lead.
The Monarchs tried to rally in the ninth. Jackson Loftin and Ryan Stoecklein led off the inning with back-to-back walks. Then with two out, Brayden Whitchurch singled both runners in to cut the lead to 6-4. Dylan Nedved looked to have a single going through the middle, but El Dorado pitcher Kyle Collins got just enough off the ball with his drag foot to deflect the hard-hit ball to shortstop Jordan Boyer for the final out of the game.
The Monarchs stranded seven runners on base.
Whitchurch went 2 for 4 with a run and two RBIs to lead the Monrachs.
Dillard (0-1) took the loss with nine strikeouts in 6 2-3 innings. He allowed six hits and four runs. Dreher worked 2 1-3 inning with four hits and two runs allowed.
