During Day 2 of the 2019 MLB Entry Draft, the Hutchinson Monarchs organization saw a familiar name be called.
Former Monarch Jordan Cannon became the 12th player in Monarchs history to be drafted in the MLB Draft. Cannon was taken in the 10th round with the 288th overall pick by the Baltomore Orioles.
Cannon played for the Monarchs in 2016 and 2017. He is the fourth Monarch to be taken in the Top 10 rounds, joining Mason Melotakis, Shane Martin and Jake Jewel.
He was a two-way player in 2016. he hit .327 with 37 total hits, eight doubles, a home run and 19 RBIs offensively. On the mound, Cannon was 1-0 with three saves and a 0.60 ERA in nine appearances. He struck out 16 in 15 innings. In 2017, Cannon was a pitcher only. He made five starts and was 3-2 with a 2.10 ERA and he totaled 23 strikeouts in 30 innings with Hutch.
According to Sam Houston State's news release on Cannon being drafted ..
"Cannon has been a key part of the Kats attack for the past four years, and was primarily used as a pitcher for his first two seasons; however, he made the switch to full-time catcher in 2018 and had a breakout season as a senior in 2019. He earned second-team all-Southland Conference honors this season. He split time behind the plate, outfield and designated hitter in 2019 and finished the year tied for second in the Southland with a .372 average. He also added a dozen doubles, four homers, two triples and 37 RBI while leading the Kats with 14 stolen bases. His .458 on-base percentage ranked second in the league and was huge in SLC play, driving in 22 of his 37 runs in league contests."
